The Awerepemhene of the Wenchi Nkyeraa Traditional Area, Nana Kobi Boateng Ansusumesua, has encouraged Ghanaians to embrace and participate in festivals to help preserve their community’s customs and traditions. In an interview with the media, Nana Boateng Ansusumesua dispelled the misconception that cultural practices are idolatrous, asserting instead that they are integral to a community’s identity and must be safeguarded.

Speaking at the Benkadi Kurubi Festival in Kintampo North, Bono East region, Nana Boateng Ansusumesua emphasized that all developed countries have maintained their cultural heritage, and Ghana should do the same to promote national development. “Customs and traditions are not idolatry. Any chief who respects the customs and traditions of the land enjoys a successful reign,” he said.

He expressed concern that many Ghanaians are increasingly adopting European customs while neglecting their own. “We are now following the culture and customs of Europeans, which is not ideal. Countries like India, China, and others in Asia highly value their cultural heritage, and I don’t see why we as a country should discard ours,” he added.

Nana Kobi Boateng Ansusumesua also used the occasion to caution the youth against actions that could disrupt this year’s elections. “I plead with the youth to avoid anything that could threaten our country’s peace and unity. Both parties, NPP and NDC, want to win, so let’s ensure that we maintain peace.”

He urged politicians to be mindful of their language during campaign periods. “My advice to politicians is to be very cautious in their utterances. We hold elections every four years, so this one should be no different. Let’s respect each other’s views and work towards peaceful elections,” he concluded.
