Chairperson of the NCCE, Josephine Nkrumah has explained that the December 17 referendum will set the pace for reforms in the local governance space and consequential amendment in the 1992 constitution after the elections.
Speaking to GBC’s Radio Ghana, she said if the referendum is approved, Ghanaians will see the elections of Assembly and Unit Committee members elected along multi-partisan lines.
However, the status quo remains if a NO vote prevails.
The NCCE Chairperson reiterated that Ghanaians should be interested in local level elections and turn out to vote in the December 17 Referendum and District level Elections because, local governance pertains development.
Meanwhile, the Director of the Institute of Local Government Studies, Dr. Nicholas Awortwi has bemoaned the low response of the youth towards the December 17 referendum.
He said this state of affairs does not brighten the prospects of local governance whose foundation is boosted by the youthful population.
According to Dr. Awortwi, the observation is premised on a voters’ opinion Survey conducted by the Institute nationwide two weeks ago.
