Ghana is one of the highest consumers of electricity per capita in sub-Saharan Africa, with nearly 80% of the population having access to electricity. The country’s solar energy sector is growing, and the government actively promotes the use of solar power to increase renewable energy adoption nationwide.

Deep Solar Ghana, a renowned solar energy provider specializing in affordable, reliable, and efficient off-grid solar systems for both domestic and commercial purposes, has donated and installed a brand-new solar power system for the Rebecca Foundation’s Sunshine Hostel at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH).

The Rebecca Akufo-Addo Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), which began operations in February 2022, has significantly improved child healthcare, saving the lives of over 56% of critically ill children who have visited the facility in the past four years. The PICU and the Sunshine Hostel have become essential components of child healthcare at KBTH, offering advanced medical care, reducing mortality rates, and improving outcomes for children with severe health conditions.

Speaking in an interview with GhanaNewsOnline, the CEO of Deep Solar Ghana, Mr. Angelo Nartey, shared his personal motivation for the donation. “I have always loved spending time with children. As a former teacher, I taught children between the ages of three and seven years. Additionally, I have seen at close hand the havoc wreaked by this horrible disease, making this initiative personally significant to me. When the idea came up to support people dealing with cancer, we visited the foundation, interacted with the children and staff, and were touched by the bravery of these young warriors as they fight cancer. From there, the decision to support this hostel was very easy,” he explained.

Ms. Vaida Ampiah, the warden of the Sunshine Hostel, expressed her gratitude for the donation. “As a home, we do our best to provide food for both the children and their parents. Currently, we are able to serve breakfast and lunch. However, due to financial constraints, we are unable to provide dinner. We are appealing to individuals and organizations to support us so we can fully care for these children,” she added.
