DEPLORABLE ROADS: Cooperative Drivers Union Boss urges Government to fix Roads

Edward Hoffman, National President of the Cooperative Drivers Union (CDU) has made a clarion call on the government to as a matter of urgency fix all deplorable roads in the country to “prevent accidents on our roads”.

According to Hoffman, there are three major elements of road safety that must be considered in making the road safe for all road users. These include the road, the driver and the vehicle, stating that good drivers need good roads to ply on to avoid accidents.

He said that as a union they train their drivers on road safety and maintenance of vehicles and believes that government must be seen to be interested in the safety of the citizens by fixing the bad roads in the country.

The National Chairman who was speaking to the media, noted that the union is into constant training of its members on modern ways of road usage, defensive driving and vehicle maintenance.

“What we do as leaders of the union is to educate our members on road safety, we make sure that every member of our union abides by all rules and regulations of road safety…we educate them to know their rights and responsibilities,” he stated in Accra.

He appealed to the general public to take road safety issues seriously because issues of road safety concerns everyone and must be seen as a shared responsibility from the ordinary driver, the passenger to the pedestrian, we must all play our roles to ensure safety.

The Vice President of the union, Peter Kumi added his voice to the call for drivers to avoid drunk-driving as that will help them make correct judgements when they are confronted with critical situations on the road.

He advised passengers not to put undue pressure on drivers by urging them to over speed on our roads.

“When passengers are looking for a vehicle or in a vehicle and asking the driver to speed up, drivers must be bold to remind them of safety,” he stated.
