Deputy Minister defies President Akufo-Addo’s directives on Public gathering

Member of Parliament (MP) for the Abuakwa North Constituency in the Eastern Region, Gifty Twum Ampofo, on Friday March 20, 2020, defied President Akufo-Addo’s directive on social distancing and suspension of public gatherings, when she held a ceremony to commission an ICT center and a mini-book library for the Akyem Osiem Methodist Basic School in her constituency.

All schools in Ghana have been shut down since March 16, 2020, following a directive by the the President as a preventive measure to curtail the spread of Coronavirus disease which has so far infected some 19 people in Ghana as at March 20, 2020. Also prohibited, is public gatherings with participants above 25.

The MP who is also a Deputy Minister of Education in charge of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) despite this directive, held the commissioning ceremony with guests and party supporters numbering over 25. The social distancing protocol was not adhered to during the ribbon cutting.

Speaking at the ceremony, the MP reiterated the commitment of the Akufo-Addo led New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to deliver quality education to Ghanaian children. She said the ICT project is part of the Ministry of Communication and GIFEC ICT revolution in the Ghanaian education system.

She said two additional ICT centers have been established in Akyem Tafo and Kukurantumi to enhance teaching and learning for national development.

She added that four more libraries stocked with about 300 books each from the Book Development Council of the Ministry Of Education will soon be established in other basic schools in the constituency to encourage reading among children.

Osabarima Agyei Mireku, chief of Akyem Osiem, receiving the keys to the facilities, commended the MP for her commitment to quality education. He appealed to the Lawmaker to honor her promise to renovate the dilapidated Osiem Post Office.
