Devastating Fire Ravages Section Sokoban Wood Village in Kumasi

The Ghana National Fire Service says upon receiving the distress call, four fire tenders were dispatched to the scene to salvage the situation.

Workers at the Sokoban Wood Village are in despair as a fire outbreak has ravaged part of the village destroying several items estimated to be some thousands of Ghana cedis.

The unfortunate incident that occurred on Thursday, October 3, 2024, according to reports destroyed 18 sheds reducing their contents to ashes. Destroyed goods, the woodworkers say mainly include plywood and other wood products used for construction.

The Ghana National Fire Service says upon receiving the distress call, four fire tenders were dispatched to the scene to salvage the situation. The firefighters were able to salvage about 32 shops while 18 were burnt down ashes.

However, no human casualties were recorded.

The Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti Regional Fire Service, DO3 Peter Addai in an interview noted that currently, the cause of the fire outbreak is unknown but investigations are ongoing to establish the root cause of the unfortunate incident.

“We quickly had to call in other fire tenders for assistance. So together we had about four fire tenders assisting to salvage the situation. The fire affected 18 shops that deal mainly in plywood and other wood products and there were no casualties. We were able also to salvage 32 shops,” the Fire Officer explained.

The affected traders are counting their losses as they lament the financial and emotional impact of the fire outbreak on their lives.

The woodworkers, their source of livelihood which helps to provide for their family has been destroyed hence calling on all the political parties in the country and the government to extend some aid to them.
