“Do or Die declaration is just a controversial catch-phrase that will not cause any problems for Ghana

Chief Executive Officer of the John Agyekum Kufuor Foundation, Prof. Baffour Agyeman-Duah, believes that Ghanaians should take former President Mahama’s vow that the 2024 election will be ‘do or die’ in their stride.

According to him, the declaration is just a controversial catch-phrase that will not cause any problems for Ghana; just like President Akufo-Addo’s ‘all die be die’ declaration in the build-up to the 2012 elections did not set the country ablaze.

“As for former President Mahama’s statement, that shouldn’t worry us. After all, the current President [Nana Akufo-Addo] made a similar statement and that didn’t change anything… So I don’t take it seriously,” Prof Agyeman-Duah said on Accra-based Citi TV.

He however cautions that the country must be alert against anything that will harm its peace and tranquillity.

“…But on a more serious note, we shouldn’t let down our guards. We have to continue strengthening our institutions.”

Former President Mahama recently stated in a radio interview during his ongoing thank-you tour across the country that the NDC did not lose the 2020 elections even though the party did not make it to power.

According to him, the controversial election which is largely perceived to have been rigged by President Akufo-Addo and the Electoral Commission did not reflect what the people had voted for.

Consequently, he said that the processes that the party had to go through, including an unsuccessful court petition has taught the NDC lesson that it must win clearly at the polling station in 2024 and that that is exactly what the NDC will do.

The election he said, will be a ‘do or die’ for the NDC.

Interestingly, the NPP has been condemning the declaration even though the same party is on record to have justified then opposition leader, Nana Akufo-Addo’s declaration that the 2012 elections would be ‘all die be die.’
