‘Dumsor’ is not back – Deputy Minister nominee for Energy assures

The Deputy Minister nominee for Energy, Richard Mensah Gyan has reassured the public that the nation will not experience a return of the dreaded power outages known as “dumsor.”

Speaking during his vetting on Tuesday, February 25, Mr Gyan-Mensah acknowledged that while there have been recent instances of power disruptions in some areas, they should not be compared to the extensive and unpredictable blackouts experienced during the peak of “dumsor.”

“We all experienced the period of dumsor, and we know what we went through,” the Deputy Minister nominee noted.

He recalled the days when power outages were scheduled and predictable, causing significant inconvenience to businesses and households across the country.

He emphasised that the current situation, although involving some sporadic outages, is not a resurgence of the severe power shortages that defined the “dumsor” era.

“I cannot deny the fact that there have been some pockets of lights going off in some areas,” he continued.

However, he insisted that these outages do not equate to ‘dumsor’, urging citizens to remain calm as the situation is being addressed.

The Deputy Minister nominee also explained that the current power challenges are largely due to maintenance work on the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP).

“You know that currently the West African Gas Pipeline is under maintenance and most of our thermal plants use the gas from Nigeria,” he clarified.

He also expressed confidence that the country would not revert to the widespread blackouts of the past.
