E/R: Xtra Gold Company ‘gunmen’ attack Akyem Dadientem chief over mining agreement
The incident has left the community shaken, and residents are demanding justice and protection from further harassment by the mining company. The authorities are urged to take swift action to address the situation and ensure the safety and well-being of the people of Akyem Adadientam.
In a shocking turn of events, the peaceful community of Akyem Adadientam was attacked by thugs allegedly hired by Xtra Gold Resources Corporation on Sunday, 21st April 2024.
The thugs, armed with guns and machetes, left the chief, Barima Ofori Asante, and his subjects in a state of panic and fear.
The chaos began when the chief, frustrated with the mining company’s refusal to meet with community leaders, sent a delegation to inform the company to cease operations and meet with the community.
However, the company declined the invitation, leading to a standoff between the community and the mining company.
Furious youth from the community blocked the mining company’s access to the site, demanding respect for their chief and compensation for damages caused by the company’s activities.
In response, the thugs attacked the youth, beating some with machetes and abducting others. The intervention of the Kyebi police and the Amanatuomiensa Chief, who also serves as the Akyem Apapam chief, was necessary to rescue the abducted individuals.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing gunshots and seeing toddlers, lactating mothers, and the elderly fleeing for their lives as the thugs chased them with machetes and guns. The community has long been concerned about the mining company’s activities, which have allegedly destroyed farms without providing adequate compensation.
Xtra Gold Resources Corporation has been prospecting for minerals in the Akyem enclaves for over 20 years, and their actions have caused significant worry among farmers and community members. The attack on the community has sparked outrage and calls for the company to be held accountable for its actions.
The incident has left the community shaken, and residents are demanding justice and protection from further harassment by the mining company. The authorities are urged to take swift action to address the situation and ensure the safety and well-being of the people of Akyem Adadientam.
