EC records 57,030 nominations for Dec. 17 District Assembly, Unit C’ttee elections
A total of 57,030 candidates have filed nominations to contest December 17, 2019, District Level Elections, data from the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has revealed.
Out of this number, 18,510 candidates will be competing at the District Assembly election while the remaining 38,520 candidates will battle for places at the Unit Committee Level elections.
The data capturing the receipt of nominations for the 2019 District Level Election in all the 16 regions of the country placed Ashanti Region as having recorded the highest number of nominations for the District Assembly Election.
The region recorded 2,815 nominations out of which 180 are female while the remaining 2,615 are male.
It is closely followed in second place by the Eastern Region, having recorded 2,661 nominations of which 175 are females and 2,486 are males.
Followed in third place is the Central Region which recorded 1,808 nominations. 93 are females and 1,715 are males.
At fourth place is the Greater Accra Region, having recorded 1,573 nominations with 122 being females and 1,451 being males.
The Volta, Upper East, Bono, Western and Upper West Regions placed 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th in that pecking order.
They recorded 1,482 (88 females/1,394males); 1,120 (30 females/1,090 males); 1,072 (23 females/1,049 males), 909 (39 females/870 males); 903 (40 females/863 males); and 848 (18 females/830 males) nominations respectively.
Bono East Region follows at the 11th position, recording 731 (23 females/708 males) nominations.
Western North and Oti Regions placed 12th and 13th positions with only ten nominations separating them.
Western North region recorded 598 nominations (15 females/583 males) while the Oti Region recorded 589 nominations (21 females/568 males).
The Ahafo Region follows at 14th position, recording 525 nominations (24 females/501 males).
The Savannah and North East Regions placed 15th and 16th respectively with the two regions recording 442 (9 females/433 males) and 434 (9 females/425 males) nominations to contest the December 17 District Assembly polls respectively.
However, there appears to be more interest shown at the Unit Committee Level elections with nominations recording marginal increase compared to the District Assembly polls.
A total of 38,520 nominations were recorded countrywide out of which 3,751 are females and 34,769 are males.
The Eastern Region recorded 5,185, being the highest number of nominations. 541 are females and 4,644 are males.
It was followed closely by the Ashanti Region having recorded 4,627 nominations (424 females/4,203 males).
The North East Region recorded 750, being the least in terms of nominations (12 females/738) as far as the Unit Committee Elections are concerned.
