EC should not act against the People with Claims of Independence – Kwesi Pratt
Popular journalist and Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, has warned the Electoral Commission (EC) to stop exercising its “independence” over the sovereignty of Ghanaians to avoid any chaos.
According to him “nothing is more nonsensical than the claim that the EC is an independent body”as an excuse to act anyhow”.
He asserted that the EC “cannot hide by the independence claim to go against the will of Ghanaians.”
He also added that “they (EC) are answerable to us, and if they don’t answer to us, we will remove them”
This assertion came in response to the plan by the EC to compile a new voters’ register ahead of 2020 elections.
Speaking at a public forum on Thursday assessing the need for new voters’ register, he argued that, the move by the EC is against the will of Ghanaians because it seeks to make improper use of Ghana’s limited resource while there are more pressing issues to focus on.
He moreover questioned the rationale in changing the current voters’ register despite it purported to being credible.
According to the ace journalist, “we have less than 10 months to elections, in this [short] ten months period, you (EC) have decided to compile a new voters register?… this short period is not enough to compile a new voters register, it will throw the next elections into chaos.”
Kwesi Pratt urged the audience to “use any means available to get public officials to do the right thing , or we punish them severely so that nobody repeats the arrogance”.
