The Jean Adukwei Mensa-led Electoral Commission (EC) has given Election Watch Ghana the cold shoulder, flatly rejecting their request to observe the upcoming December 7 elections. In a curt, three-line letter dated November 4, the EC, under Mensa’s signature, informed the civil society group that their bid for observer status was declined—no explanations, no room for negotiation.

In her letter titled “RE: APPLICATION FOR ACCREDITATION AS OBSERVER FOR 2024 GENERAL ELECTION,” Jean Mensa wrote, “The Commission is unable to accept your application at this time.”

After thanking them for their interest, she ended with “assurances of our highest regard”—a gesture that might ring hollow for Election Watch Ghana, whose mission is to safeguard electoral transparency.
