EC Temporarily Halts Collation of Results in Ablekuma North Constituency
The halt was prompted by disturbances at the collation center, including reports of political party members besieging the premises and pressuring staff to announce results not reflected on the official pink sheets.
The Electoral Commission of Ghana has announced the temporary suspension of the collation of election results in the Ablekuma North constituency. At a brief press conference, Deputy Chairperson of the Commission, Samuel Tetteh, assured the public of the EC’s unwavering commitment to finalizing the December 7 polls in accordance with the law.
According to Mr. Tetteh, the decision to halt the collation process was made following misleading statements about the commission’s activities and security concerns at the Greater Accra Regional Office, where the collation was scheduled to take place.
Legal Compliance and Security Concerns
“We want to assure the public that the collation of results will be completed for all outstanding constituencies in strict adherence to the legal requirements enshrined in CI 127,” Mr. Tetteh stated. He emphasized that the Commission is committed to upholding transparency and credibility in the electoral process.
The halt was prompted by disturbances at the collation center, including reports of political party members besieging the premises and pressuring staff to announce results not reflected on the official pink sheets.
“Our staff have reported feeling extremely unsafe, even with the presence of security personnel. As a result, we have taken this decision to prioritize their safety and ensure that collation is conducted within the legal and security frameworks necessary for credible results,” Mr. Tetteh lamented.
Wider Security Challenges
Mr. Tetteh revealed that similar incidents of disruption and security concerns had occurred in other constituencies, including Dome Kwabenya, Okaikoi Central, and Tema Central.
Call for Calm and Cooperation
The Deputy Chairperson appealed to political parties to withdraw their members from collation centers to allow the process to proceed smoothly. “We urge all political parties to respect the law and cooperate with the Commission to ensure the integrity of the election results,” he concluded.
The Electoral Commission reaffirmed its commitment to delivering a credible electoral process and urged all stakeholders to exercise patience as the collation process resumes under improved legal and security conditions.
