ECG alone Owes GRIDco over Ghc900m

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDco), Mr Jonathan Amoako-Baah, has appealed to wholesale power consumers in the country to pay all debts owing the company to enable them discharge their duties efficiently.

According to him, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) alone owes GRIDco over 900 million Ghana Cedis, adding that this was a drain on the operations of the facility.

The CEO revealed this at a media encounter at the plant in Tema to unveil activities to mark the 10th anniversary celebrations of GRIDco.

Mr Amoako-Baah noted that GRIDco came into being by an act of Parliament on the 1st of August, 2008 to transmit power from Volta River Authority (VRA) to ECG to supply to the general consumers.

“Government wanted to create a level playing field in the supply and distribution of power, as such the decision to take that task to GRIDco,” he said.

In a presentation on GRIDco, the Director, Systems Operations, Mr Mark Baah, stated that even though GRIDco inherited 43 substations and 4,000 kilometres of transmission lines from VRA, it now has 68 substations and 5000 kilometers of transmission lines.

He said GRIDCO now uses more modern grid through general improvement like installations and the like.

Mr Baah said that the core value of GRIDco was to be a model electricity company that provides reliable electric grid for development.

He emphasised that their objectives is to improve upon the reliability and stability of the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS).

Mr Baah also said measures were underway to progressively reduce transmission losses to below 4 per cent.

He said GRIDco would integrate new power generations into the NITS.

He, however, lamented a few challenges such as reduction in revenue by 17.5 per cent due to the reduction of tariffs and the payment of transmission loses.

Payment of compensations, increased agitations, low levels of reservoirs at Akosombo were some of the challenges they faced.

Manager, Systems Control Office of GRIDco, Rev Frank Okyere, took the media through a tour on how power was transmitted.
