ECG staff union denies allegations of illegal connections by ACEP

The Public Utilities Workers Union (PUWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana has strongly refuted allegations made by Mr Benjamin Boakye, Executive Director of the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), that staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) are involved in illegal power connections.

In a statement released by PUWU, the union described the claims as “baseless” and “unfounded,” emphasising that no evidence has been provided to support such accusations.

The union expressed concern over the potential harm these allegations could cause to the reputation of ECG workers and their dedication to maintaining stable power supply across the country.

“We find these allegations against staff of ECG not only misleading but also deeply damaging to the reputation of our members.

The claim that ECG workers are involved in illegal activities undermines the collective efforts of staff who work tirelessly, often under very challenging conditions,” the statement read.

PUWU further criticised Mr Boakye’s comments, arguing that ACEP exposed ECG staff to public ridicule and potential attacks.

“Statements like these, especially from a public figure of his calibre, erode public trust and harm morale, particularly at a time when stakeholders should be working together to address critical challenges in Ghana’s energy sector,” the union added.

The union reaffirmed the commitment of ECG staff to their professional mandate of providing quality, reliable, and safe electricity to support Ghana’s economic growth and development.

PUWU also called on Mr Boakye and ACEP to engage constructively with stakeholders to find sustainable solutions to the country’s energy challenges rather than making “unsubstantiated accusations” that divert attention from pressing issues.
