Election 2020: UN Ambassador launches Peace Campaign

Ahead of the 2020 general elections, the United Nations Eminent Peace Ambassador to Ghana Bishop Sam Owusu, has launched a peace campaign dubbed “Every Life Count”. This campaign is to preach the essence of peace before, during, and after this year’s election.

The campaign was launched during the observation of the United Nations Peace Day on the theme “Shaping Peace together”. It was held in the auditorium of the Potterville International Ministry in Accra.

The UN Eminent Peace Ambassador who is also the Country Director for International Association of World Peace Advocates (IAWPA)-Ghana urged all Stakeholders, including citizens of Ghana to join hands to embark on vigorous campaigns for peace as the election 2020 approaches.

According to Bishop Owusu, the campaign will help increase the level of people’s knowledge on peace and election violence, make them vigilant and stay away from violence before during, and after elections, adding that “we are very serious about this platform of peace among all humanity globally, especially as we approach our general elections, I wish to also encourage all and sundry who are embarking on this peace missions to be courageous and vigilant at all times”.

He explained that peace is one of the essential things we need to make us thrive individually and as a nation and that without peace, it will be impossible for humans to learn and create something to develop themselves. “When there is no peace… there are riots, misunderstandings, violence, war, conflict and everyone would be busy trying to protect their lives and that of those they care about most”.

Bishop Owusu who is also the General Overseer of the Pottersville International Ministries indicated that IAWPA is a UN Global Compact Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and civil society organization that supports the ten principles of the UN Global Compact Sustainable Development Goals. He highlighted the urgent need for all to come together with one accord and advocate for peace.

“I do with sincere heart request that the players in the upcoming elections especially major political parties and it’s stakeholders stand together with us to promote a violence-free election before, during, and after the general elections on December 7. I believe we can only develop, preserve and progress when we stand together in peace and harmony, United to strengthen humanity,” Bishop Owusu stated.

He cautioned Ghanaians to desist from using the hard-won reputation of the late Kofi Annan and the United Nations to solicit for funds for their programs that are not associated with the UN’s peacekeeping agenda.

This action he said has gone a long way to tarnish the image and good efforts of some genuine UN organizations like IAWPA in the country that need help to promote peace

He grateful to the Ghana government for its active war on Covid-19 in Ghana saying “we acknowledge the tremendous efforts of our government with regards to the measures it has taken to combat and contain this deadly virus, we appreciate our health care workers, police officers and all those who have sacrificed their lives on the front line of this war”.
