Election 2024: Mahama says protest against EC is to ensure peaceful and fair elections

“Our issues with the Electoral Commission are not because we don’t like the commissioners or the EC,” Mahama clarified.

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has defended the party’s decision to hold a protest against the Electoral Commission (EC). The NDC has expressed concerns about the accuracy of the voters’ register, warning that inconsistencies could undermine the fairness of the upcoming December 7 elections.

While addressing a gathering during phase two of his Greater Accra regional tour, Mahama urged Ghanaians to back the NDC’s call for a credible and transparent register to ensure a just electoral process.

“Our issues with the Electoral Commission are not because we don’t like the commissioners or the EC,” Mahama clarified. “Our issue with the Electoral Commission is that we want peace during and after the election.”

He emphasized that the NDC’s critique of the EC is driven by the desire for a process that everyone can trust. “So when we raise issues about the electoral process, it is because we want the EC to sit up and do its job so that all of us can have confidence in the electoral process,” Mahama added.

He called on all Ghanaians to participate in the demonstration the party has planned for the following Tuesday, saying: “The only way we can get the EC to do its job is to pressure the EC to do it. And that is why on the 17th of this month, next Tuesday, we are doing a demonstration at the EC office.”

Mahama made it clear that the protest isn’t just for NDC supporters but for all Ghanaians who want a transparent election. “That demonstration is not only NDC, it is all Ghanaians who are willing to join the demonstration so that we go and tell EC to sit up and do its work properly so that we have a peaceful election. That’s the purpose of that demonstration,” he concluded.
