Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, a former Minority Chief Whip in the 8th Parliament, has noted that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is targeting at least 32 per cent of votes in the Ashanti Region in the upcoming December polls.

Since 1992, the commencement of the Fourth Republic, the Asawase lawmaker says the NDC’s worst performance in the region has been around 20 per cent of the votes.

Speaking about the neglect of the region by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the last 8 years despite the polity being its ‘world bank’ in terms of votes, the former Minister of Youth and Sports says residents are now awakened.

He said the consciousness of the people will increase the NDC’s votes, especially in the presidential, to 32 per cent in the looming polls.

“I’m very optimistic that this time around the NDC should be able to get at least about 32 per cent of votes in the Ashanti Region,” he said.

During an engagement with the media Friday, July 19, 2024, the Member of Parliament indicated that the NPP’s vision to amass over 80 per cent of the votes cast is not attainable.

The NPP, according to the Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare and running mate Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, have appealed to voters to deliver 85 per cent of the presidential votes for the party.

But Muntaka says the struggle people are going through will reflect in the votes come December.

“With all the struggles that are so glaring, are you going to deny us from voting? Or how are you going to get the 85 per cent? I heard somebody screaming about 85 per cent and I said this guy is coming from some kind of place,” he stated.
