Election 2024: Opuni-Frimpong urges Asiedu Nketia to sign peace pact

This appeal comes after Mr. Nketia laid out specific conditions that the NDC insists must be met before they consider endorsing the Peace Pact proposed by the National Peace Council in preparation for the December 7 polls.

Rev. Dr. Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong, Executive Director of the Alliance for Christian Advocacy Africa, has called on the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, to pledge his commitment to peace by signing the peace pact ahead of the December elections.

This appeal comes after Mr. Nketia laid out specific conditions that the NDC insists must be met before they consider endorsing the Peace Pact proposed by the National Peace Council in preparation for the December 7 polls.

Expressing his doubts about the effectiveness of previous Peace Pacts, Mr. Nketia pointed out that they had not yielded the desired outcomes, particularly referencing the 2020 elections where eight NDC members were allegedly killed by national security personnel without any accountability.

During an August 20 meeting with the National Peace Council at the NDC headquarters, Mr. Nketia outlined certain demands for the NDC’s participation in the Peace Pact, including the full implementation of recommendations from the investigation into the violence during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.

In response, Rev. Dr. Opuni-Frimpong urged Mr. Nketia to commit to peace during an interview on Eyewitness News on Citi FM.

“We plead with the chairman of the NDC, our big father Asiedu Nketia, that we need democrats to practice democracy. We, as a country, are saying as part of our democratic culture, we commit to acceptance of election results, and we commit to using legal and acceptable processes in making corrections.

“We will not mobilize people to the streets—that is the essence of the peace pact, and we must all commit to it,” he emphasized.
