The actor Prince David Osei has called on Ghanaians to reject the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, in the 2024 general election.

Speaking at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) manifesto launch in Takoradi on Sunday (18 August), Osei argued that voting for the NDC and Mahama would lead Ghana into economic decline and instability. He criticised the NDC’s record, citing economic mismanagement and corruption during Mahama’s previous presidency.

“The alternative is not the solution; it will send us into an abyss of disaster. Vote for progress. Vote Bawumia, vote Matthew Opoku Prempeh,” Osei urged, emphasising his support for the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, as the path to sustained growth and a brighter future for Ghana.

For his part, Dr Bawumia, the presidential candidate of the NPP, said the party’s record in governance is by far superior to that of the NDC and John Mahama.

He highlighted the NPP administration’s notable accomplishments in infrastructure, education, health care and digital transformation. He pointed to key initiatives such as the Free Senior High School policy, the One District, One Factory policy and the digitisation of public services as evidence of the party’s dedication to improving the lives of Ghanaians.

“Our track record is superior to that of my opponent,” Dr Bawumia declared. “Ladies and gentlemen, if there was any doubt, I believe it is crystal clear from the data-backed account we have given that our overall performance and track record are superior to that of my opponent and his party in virtually every sector!”

He also defended the NPP’s handling of the economy during global crises like the COVID-19 pandemic and rising inflation, demonstrating the party’s resilience and capability. Despite the continuing difficulties, he commended the NPP government for continuing to implement policies aimed at alleviating hardship and promoting economic recovery.

Dr Bawumia criticised the NDC for failing to deliver on promises made during its time in office, particularly regarding power shortages and economic instability – issues that the NPP has since addressed. He urged NPP members to emphasise these achievements as they engage with voters.

He also called for unity and commitment to the party as it prepares for the election. He encouraged members to stay focused on securing victory for the NPP.

“The other part, of course, is about the courage and confidence to put what he intends to do differently this time around with the power he seeks, side by side with the vision I have for Ghana and the clear roadmap to getting the work done.

“That is the choice we are presenting to you, the Ghanaian voter, on 7 December,” Bawumia said.
