Election 2024: Vote for Someone who’ll not use Statistics to mislead you – Domelevo
He also urged the media to prioritize reporting on illicit financial flows, describing them as critical components of corruption.
Former Auditor General Daniel Yao Domelevo has urged Ghanaians to vote for a leader who embodies honesty and refrains from using statistics to mislead the public. He emphasized that transformative leadership is crucial for Ghana’s progress, stating, “If we get the right leadership, Ghana can transform.”
Mr. Domelevo made these remarks on Tuesday during a Public Forum organized by the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) in Accra. The event, themed “Curbing Illicit Financial Flows through Accountable Governance: The Role of the Media,” brought together key stakeholders to discuss governance and transparency issues.
In his address, Mr. Domelevo introduced the acronym “FATHER” to describe the qualities Ghanaians should look for in a leader:
- Fairness: “Vote for a leader who is fair and rewards those who deserve to be rewarded.”
- Accountability: “Support a leader who holds themselves accountable for their actions.”
- Trustworthiness: “Choose a leader in whom you can trust, not one who will later question your trust in them.”
- Honesty: “Do not vote for leaders who use figures to confuse the public.”
- Equitability: “Elect a leader who ensures resources are distributed fairly.”
- Respect: “Support a leader who respects differing opinions, including those of opponents.”
On the subject of corruption, Mr. Domelevo called on journalists to play an active role in combating the menace by supporting the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) with relevant information. He warned that fighting corruption is not without risks, noting, “If you fight corruption and it doesn’t fight you back, then you’re not making an impact.”
He also urged the media to prioritize reporting on illicit financial flows, describing them as critical components of corruption.
The forum made a call to action for all stakeholders to work collaboratively toward promoting accountable governance and reducing corruption in Ghana.
