Electrochem Allocates 2,000 Acres for Outgrower Scheme to Resolve Songor Salt Mining Dispute
Abdul Razak Adam, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Electrochem, disclosed that seven local associations have already been allocated land. He further revealed that an additional 1,000 acres have been designated for the community plan system.
Electrochem Ghana Limited has introduced an out-grower scheme designed to partner with local salt miners as it moves to defuse the tension between it and community members in Ada.
This initiative follows a recommendation by a joint parliamentary committee that suggested portions of the company’s 41,000-acre concession be ceded to the residents.
For years, the Ada community has resisted Electrochem’s operations, accusing the company of depriving them of their livelihoods. The conflict escalated in November 2023, culminating in a fatal shooting during a violent clash between the company’s staff and the local residents.
Despite Parliament rejecting the joint committee’s report, Electrochem has taken proactive measures to address the community’s grievances. The company has set aside 1,000 acres for the out-grower scheme and has invited other groups to participate.
Abdul Razak Adam, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Electrochem, disclosed that seven local associations have already been allocated land. He further revealed that an additional 1,000 acres have been designated for the community plan system.
“So, the seven associations that I have mentioned, we have already earmarked lands for them. We are not just talking about it; we’ve actually done it, and I have the site plans here with me to ensure that they can look at it, take ownership from today, and move forward. I encourage more companies, and more businesses, to please come forward. We are willing to work with you and ensure that these lands are made available to you,” Adam stated.
“It is the vision of Electrochem Ghana to position Ghana as a dominant player in the global chloroalkyl industry.
“We rise once again to meet the demand of the community, having extensively engaged our host communities, their representatives, the Ada Traditional Council, the opinion leaders, and recently with our parliamentarians.”
He added, “Through this scheme, community members will have the opportunity as identified groups to put resources and knowledge together to establish themselves as registered businesses.
“We will train them for responsible mining, business management, and secondary entrepreneurship. We will work closely with the participatory groups to implement eco-friendly mining techniques and promote responsible resource management to prioritize sustainability and protect our beautiful land,” he said during the launch of the scheme on Monday, August 26, 2024, at Ada.
He added, “Poverty is the common enemy; let’s join hands to eliminate poverty.”
On her part, the DCE for Ada East, Sarah Dugbakie Pobee lauded the newly established out-grower scheme by Electrochem Ghana Limited and stressed its potential to encourage young women in the community to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) courses and actively participate in the mining project. She also expressed gratitude to President Akufo-Addo for the Free SHS policy, which has enabled more students to access free education.
Dzetse Nene Kabu Abram Akuaku III, the Paramount Chief of the Ada Traditional Area, also commended the initiative, pledging his support to ensure safe mining practices and maintain a peaceful environment.
The beneficiary groups include the Ada Youth Forum East, Ada Youth Forum West, Songor Salt Producers Association, Ada Community Chiefs Association, and Tekpebiavwe Youth Group, among others.
