Environment Minister Murtala visits Agbogbloshie Scrap Dealers

The Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology, Hon. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammad, has paid a courtesy visit to the Agbogbloshie Scrap Dealers Association to discuss government efforts toward a safer environment and the need to eliminate the burning of waste materials.
Addressing the scrap dealers in their native language, the Minister received applause as he advised them on alternative methods to manage waste without burning, which poses serious health risks to them and nearby residents.

In an interview with journalists, Hon. Murtala highlighted the dangers associated with electronic waste disposal in the area, describing it as a major source of health concerns for many residents. He stressed that the activities of the scrap dealers, particularly the uncontrolled burning of waste materials, contribute to environmental pollution and severe health challenges.

The Minister further noted that a designated collection point exists within the scrapyard to handle electronic waste. This facility is responsible for safely processing waste materials, extracting valuable components such as copper without harming the environment.
Hon. Murtala reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to ensuring a clean and healthy environment for all Ghanaians. He emphasized the need for continuous stakeholder engagement to find sustainable solutions for waste management in the area.
