Odwana fire outbreak: President Akufo-Addo pledges support to affected traders

Traders and residents of the Odwana market woke up on Wednesday morning with terrifying news as the market got struck with a fire outbreak that destroyed the wares of traders worth thousands of Cedis.

Reports say the incident occurred at about 1:00 AM on Wednesday, November 18, 2020.

According to eyewitnesses, the damages caused by the fire could have been minimized, had it not been for the Fire Service’s failed attempts in bringing the inferno under control at the early stage of the incident.

According to reports, two fire tenders quickly arrived a few minutes after the incident began, but failed to normalize the situation due to lack of water in the fire tenders.

The president, upon visiting the scene later after the incident assured all affected people of government support.

In an interview with Journalists, the president, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo said he and his government are putting things together to support people who lost their properties as a result of the fire outbreak to enable them to get back to their businesses.

The president further added that the government will very soon embark on a project that would see all markets in the Greater Accra region re-wired.

The Municipal Coordinator of the Korle Klottey municipal hinted that traders would not be allowed into the market to carry their activities. Speaking to Journalists, he explained that the crowded nature of the market made it difficult for the fire tenders to get access into the market to fight the fire as the incident occurred.

He said the Municipal is currently planning to figure out where to move the traders for the interim as they put measures in place to bring back the Odwana market into proper condition.

This fire outbreak happens to be the sixth of its kind at the Odwana market, all claiming properties worth thousands of cedis.

The terrifying incident took the Ghana Fire Service over two hours to calm down the fire.
