Free SHS creating shortage of apprentices – Dressmakers & Tailors Assoc.
The Central Regional Secretary of the Ghana National Dressmakers and Tailors Association Mrs. Francisca Acquah has bemoaned the fact that the “Free SHS” policy has created a shortage of apprentices across the country.
According to her, many Junior High School graduates who would have found themselves in apprenticeship including dressmaking because of their poor exam results, now continue with the senior high school education courtesy the Free SHS programme.
Mrs. Francisca Acquah made the comment at a graduation ceremony for 35 dressmakers in the Ajumako Enyan Essiam District over the weekend.
She said it is time for some of these students with poor grades to be transferred to the fashion sector as they may not ultimately go beyond secondary school education into the universities.
“Students with grades between 30 to 50 need to be in the fashion sector and not spend their time in schooling because of Free Senior High School Policy. The government is wasting the time of student with grade 30 to 50 because they most likely will not continue to the universities. So why don’t we make them learn a trade right after they complete JHS as they’ll have their handiwork and make some money,” Mrs. Francisca Acquah said.
For his part, the Central Regional Vice Chairman for the Ghana National Dressmakers and Toilers Association Mr. Almed Ibrahim told Kasapa FM News Yaw Boagyan that government pushing the Youth into Community Policing is not the way to go as it’s a waste of time.
He said the employment is temporary, hence the need for government to push some of the Youth into the fashion sector.
“So I am appealing to the government to stop recruiting people into community policing and rather focus on recruiting them into the fashion sector where they will have life-long employment, “Mr. Almed Ibrahim added.
