Free Water: Minister, GWCL Officials tour Covid-19 Water Facilities

Ministry for Sanitation and Water Resources (MSWR) has collaborated with the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to inspect selected COVID-19 water tank facilities at Lantey Maamli, ‘T’Gardens, Chemunaa and X’tra O which are all suburbs of Chorkor in the Greater Accra Region.

The move was to enable the delegation assess first-hand information on the facilities as well as to familiarize with the processes leading to the distribution of free water to residents as announced by President Nana Akufo-Addo. It forms part of the relief package to Ghanaians in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has claimed thousands of lives across the world. It has challenged governments to introduce pragmatic measures as relief to their citizens and to curb the spread.

Briefing the media shortly after the tour of the facilities, Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Mrs. Cecelia Abena Dapaah commended residents of the various communities for their judicious use of water in this period. She urged the Assembly and opinion leaders to ensure fair distribution of the free water and ensure that it gets to all.

She also urged the residents to practice social distancing protocols, frequently wash their hands, regularly apply hand sanitizer and always put on their face masks as it is the surest way to protect themselves from the deadly virus.

On his part, the Managing Director of the GWCL, Ing. Dr. Clifford Braimah, hinted that the company is in the process of replacing some worn-out parts of some of the facilities. He said his men are also addressing water leakages in the mentioned areas and urged the public to report any challenges they might be facing to the authorities for appropriate action.

Regional Chief Manager of the Accra West GWCL, Mr. Teiko Codjoe said the company suppliers 60 million liters of water daily to meet the demands of the communities.
