Galamsey: Gov’t Has Betrayed Public Trust- iWATCH Africa

Non-governmental media and policy organization iWATCH has criticized the failed fight against illegal mining in the country as a betrayal of public trust by the Akufo-Addo-led government.

The group observes that the menace is on the ascendancy despite the President putting his presidency on the line with the over GH¢300 million invested in the fight coming to nothing.

In the face of this, iWATCH also recognizes that the entire country’s water source is under threat with its attendant effect on the environment and food production.

“The situation has worsened, illegal mining continues to devastate our lands, water bodies, and communities. The government’s failure to protect our environment is a betrayal of public trust.”

“We have reached a critical moment where immediate and decisive action is essential to stop the devastating effects of galamsey…iWatch Africa strongly urges the President to take these crucial and immediate steps to end the galamsey crisis, which threatens not only our environment but the very future of Ghana. The time to act is now.”

It has therefore joined calls for an immediate ban on illegal mining across the country; intensification of regulatory enforcement by providing the necessary resources to security agencies to crack down on offenders and ensure they are prosecuted without delay.

It added, “Government must prioritize immediate relief and long-term economic recovery for communities devastated by illegal mining. Implement comprehensive strategies that address the severe environmental damage, health hazards, and social conflicts associated with this destructive practice. Employ community-based initiatives, technological solutions, and international cooperation to curb illegal mining and promote sustainable development.”
