The Acting CEO of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) and National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has announced an impending arrest of a prominent figure involved in illegal mining, locally known as galamsey.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s The Point of View with Bernard Avle, Sammy Gyamfi hinted that one of the country’s most influential illegal mining kingpins, along with several collaborators, will soon be apprehended.

“I have good news for you—mark my words. In the next few days, one of the biggest galamsey kingpins and his collaborators will be arrested,” Gyamfi confidently stated during the interview monitored by AwakeNewsroom.

He highlighted recent progress made in the fight against illegal mining, particularly the recovery of forest reserves previously devastated by galamsey operations. According to him, seven out of nine severely affected forest reserves have been reclaimed through government-led interventions.

“We have conducted a series of successful raids. Out of the nine forest reserves that had been reduced to red zones under the previous administration, we have secured almost seven. And the evidence is there for all to see,” he added.

Gyamfi went on to detail the results of recent anti-galamsey operations, including the arrest of over 160 individuals and the seizure of large quantities of heavy equipment used in illegal mining.

“The main kingpins operating within the forest reserves have been flushed out. In the process, more than 160 people have been arrested. Authorities have seized 125 excavators, 10 bulldozers, seven pickup trucks, and 50 motorbikes,” he revealed.

Drawing comparisons with the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, Gyamfi claimed that under the current government, there have been no reports of missing equipment or corruption scandals linked to anti-galamsey operations.

“You haven’t heard that excavators have gone missing because the party needs money. You haven’t heard that we procured drones to fight illegal mining and now can’t account for them. You haven’t heard of government appointees involved in illegal mining,” he said.

Gyamfi’s remarks signal a renewed commitment by the NDC-led administration to end illegal mining and restore Ghana’s degraded lands and forest reserves.
