Galamsey will never stop in Ghana – Kweku Darlington
These sites help employ the jobless masses and allow them to earn some money.
Ghanaian singer Kweku Darlington has shared his views on why illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, will continue to exist in the country.
In an interview with Amansan Krakye, he stated, “First of all, we need to recognise that galamsey is not something that will end anytime soon. It’s important to accept that it will never stop.”
He emphasised the lack of job opportunities in the country, saying, “Many people are unemployed, and when someone opens a galamsey site, it provides jobs for a lot of people.”
Darlington acknowledged the economic benefits of galamsey, noting, “These sites help employ the jobless masses and allow them to earn some money. However, the negative impact on our water bodies is concerning.”
The artiste, furthermore, urged the government to explore other options of keeping the water bodies clean, suggesting, “The government should engage mining experts to visit these galamsey sites and educate miners on proper practices that won’t harm our water resources.”
