The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has strongly criticized Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Godfred Dame for his comments on the Court of Appeal’s verdict in the controversial ambulance procurement case.

The case involved Minority Leader Cassiel Ato Forson and businessman Richard Jakpa, who were accused of causing financial loss to the state through the procurement of ambulances. On Tuesday, the Court of Appeal acquitted and discharged both individuals.

Following the ruling, Godfred Dame described the judgment as “perverse,” “grossly unfair,” and “erroneous.” His remarks have drawn sharp rebuke from the GBA, particularly from its Public Relations Officer, Saviour Kudze.

Speaking on Joy FM on July 30, 2024, Kudze questioned whether Dame would have used such language if the decision had been in his favor. “Assuming the decisions were made in his favor, would he be using such words? He is the leader of the Bar. We shouldn’t expect him to be using such words,” Kudze stated.

Kudze emphasized that the Attorney-General, as a leading figure in the legal community, should exercise restraint and professionalism in his comments. “You could say you disagree with the verdict of the court and you will take steps. I think that is what everybody does. But an official leader using such words, we take exception to it,” Kudze added, as reported by myjoyonline.com.

The GBA’s criticism highlights the importance of maintaining decorum and respect in public discourse, especially from high-ranking officials in the legal profession. The association’s stance underscores the need for constructive dialogue and adherence to professional standards, even in the face of unfavorable legal outcomes.
