Whatsup news has picked up reliable information that the Ghana Airport Company Limited has virtually been crippled by lack of funds as management pays workers their salaries in installments.
Insiders say for the past couple of weeks and much to the displeasure of workers, financial difficulties have forced the GACL to withhold parts of staff salaries for a later date.
To confirm this financial difficulty, the Managing Director of GACL, Yaw Kwakwah recently threatened to repossess poorly performing shops at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).
There are rife speculations within that GACL is deliberately being run down to make easier, the hand-over of the state owned airport management company to Turkish company, TAV Airport Holding.
Parliamentarians from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have warned the Akufo-Addo administration to steer clear of the subtle plans to cede the management of Ghanaian airports to a foreign interest.
Meanwhile, while the GACL buckles under serious financial difficulties, the company’s Managing Director is globe-trotting with heavy travel expenditures.
Whatsup news on Thursday, November 28, 2019 intercepted an itemized expenditure outlining a whooping GHC 630,000 spent by Yaw Kwakwah, the Managing Director of the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL) in approximately 11 months on foreign trips.
Mr. Kwakwah hardly lasted one year as the GACL MD following his appointment to the top job by President Akufo Addo this year.
For instance, in January 2019, he spent a whooping GHC 55,456 on a trip to Tel Aviv in Israel. The following month (February 2019), he was on the next plane to Luxor in Egypt where he expended another GHC 62,938.
In March 2019, he spent the highest amount of 95,558.60 to Montreal – Canada.
On the list, he virtually travelled every month except May and October, 2019. In total, he has made 10 foreign travels, expended GHC 630,000 and at an average of GHC 62,000 on every trip per month for 10 months within a year.
Before his appointment, Mr Kwakwah has been a subject of controversy at the GACL when he was the Deputy Managing Director.
In 2018, workers hoisted red flags and bandanas in protest against Mr Kwakwah who reportedly sued the company in the past for wrongful termination of his appointment as Deputy MD.
The workers are largely angry about him being recalled to take his position for the second time.
According to the workers, Mr. Kwakwah lost the case he filed against the company at the time, but failed to return the company’s properties in his possession as directed by the court.
