National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced it is ready to commence registration of eligible Ghanaians in the Central, Western North and Western Regions of Ghana.
The exercise, according to the authority would start from January 27,2020 and is expected to end on Tuesday February 18, 2020 and will run simultaneously in all the 48 districts of the three regions from 7am to 5pm each day excluding Sundays and public holidays.
This was made by the Executive secretary of the Authority, Professor Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah, at a media briefing in Takoradi on Friday which sought to highlight to the media some of the successful achievements marked from the registration journey and also announced the authority’s readiness for the exercise in the regions.
According to him, since the commencement of the mass registration exercise in April 29, 2019, the authority had so far conducted the mass registration exercise in Greater Accra region, Volta region, Oti region, Northern region, Savannah region, North East, Upper East and Upper West regions.
The rest are, Bono region, Bono East, Ahafo and Ashanti regions remaining four regions which are Central, Western, Western North and Eastern regions.
Mr Attafuah revealed that the authority had as at January 16, 2020 registered a total of 7,227,939 eligible Ghanaians onto the system and 6, 282, 192 cards had been printed with 4, 173, 173 of the cards issued to owners.
He emphasized that the registration is absolutely free and no Ghanaian is expected to pay a dime or whatsoever to any official of the exercise either before, during or after the re-registration. He urged applicants to report any NIA official who would demand something from them to the NIA or any appropriate authority for sanctioning.
Highlighting on some of the requirements an applicant would be required to produce, Professor Attafuah mentioned that an applicant must first of all be Ghanaian, should produce his or her date and place of birth, residential, digital address code, other documents that proves one’s identity such as birth certificate, evidence of acquired citizenship and valid Ghana passport.
He was quick to add that an applicant who does not have any of them would have to go through a vouching process where a relative or two non-relative persons who had been registered and issued with the card identifies him or her under oath before a Commissioner of Oath.
The criminologist urged the people of the three regions to turn up in their numbers to go and register when the date is due and cautioned them to provide accurate information to the NIA officials during the process saying “anyone who provides false information during this process is liable to prosecution leading to the payment of a fine and or serving a jail term.”
