The Senior Staff Association (SSA) and Union of the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike if management fails to stop the incessant attacks on its staff at Tamale in the Northern region.
The joint executives reported of various verbal attacks on staff of the Authority by members of a vigilante group associated with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). They also accused the Staff of signing contracts with contractors who are allegedly affiliated to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In a statement signed by both executives of the authority, Messrs Oswald Amanfu and Noble Yusroku indicated that some vigilante groups of the NPP attacked the regional office of the GHA in Tamale and ordered them to stop working.
According to the joint executives, the threats meted out to the staff in the region has happened thrice, noting that “the previous attack was at the regional office and the recent one which occurred on the 15th of May, 2018, at the same office.”
The vigilante group has also prevented contractors from undertaking their assigned contracts, making it impossible for them to work assiduously in the region.
The joint executives therefore condemned the act and asked the Ministry to take the same stance and put in measures to stop the attack on their colleagues.
“We the staff members of GHA call on the management of the Ministry to condemn the act and appropriately deal with the issue to end the attack,” it stated.
They also call on the Northern Regional Security Council (NRSC) to cause the arrest of the vigilante group and prosecute them as per the law to serve as a deterrent to others.
“This would be the only way to safeguard our staffs from further attacks and safety is guaranteed,” the statement noted.
