Ghana Hosts 2nd Conference on Tobacco Control and Development
Theme: "Breaking Barriers, Building Futures: Advancing the Tobacco Control Ecosystem in Africa"
Ghana is currently hosting the 2nd Conference on Tobacco Control and Development, a pivotal event addressing the urgent challenges of tobacco use across the African continent. Taking place at the Labadi Beach Hotel, the conference which began on November 13, 2024, is expected to span over two days, bringing together a distinguished group of policymakers, health experts, public health advocates, and representatives from international organizations.
Among others, the gathering aims to unite leaders in a shared mission to curb the devastating health and socioeconomic effects of tobacco on African communities.
Under the theme “Breaking Barriers, Building Futures: Advancing the Tobacco Control Ecosystem in Africa,” this year’s conference is focusing on a diverse range of topics critical to Africa’s tobacco control efforts. Discussants are tackling issues such as the formulation and enforcement of more robust tobacco control policies, strategies to assess and mitigate the health impacts of tobacco-related diseases, and ways to shield vulnerable populations, particularly young people, from the aggressive marketing strategies employed by the tobacco industry.
One of the pressing concerns at the conference is the exploration of sustainable alternatives for farmers traditionally dependent on tobacco cultivation. With the growing awareness of the harmful effects of tobacco and its declining profitability for small farmers, participants are exploring how alternative livelihoods could promote both health and economic sustainability for communities across Africa. There is a strong emphasis on collaborative solutions that balance public health goals with the economic needs of these communities.
Another key topic is the battle against the illicit tobacco trade, which continues to undermine anti-tobacco measures and contributes to the spread of unregulated and often more harmful tobacco products. Experts are sharing insights on strategies to curb this illegal trade, which has far-reaching impacts on health and revenue in African nations. Discussions are focused on policy interventions, stronger law enforcement partnerships, and the importance of transnational cooperation to tackle this complex issue effectively.
Participants are also discussing the necessity for stronger partnerships, adequate funding, and continuous support for tobacco control programs. Emphasizing the importance of sustainable funding, health advocates are calling for increased investments to strengthen anti-tobacco efforts and enhance their reach across Africa.
The conference provides a platform for countries to share case studies and success stories, showcasing innovative programs and impactful campaigns from across the continent. These stories not only highlight the progress made by various nations but also underscore the power of regional collaboration. The sessions aim to inspire new initiatives while reinforcing Ghana’s role as a leader in tobacco control on the continent.
In addition to expert panels and presentations, the conference is offering networking opportunities that allow participants to build connections and establish partnerships that will strengthen tobacco control efforts regionally and internationally. The event is a testament to Africa’s growing commitment to a healthier, more sustainable future, with Ghana at the forefront of efforts to curb the continent’s tobacco use and promote positive health outcomes for all.
