Ghana is broke, gov’t is struggling to fund handing-over ceremony – Economist claims

Ghanaian economist Dr Sa-ad Iddrisu claims that the country’s economy is not as strong as the outgoing government has reported and that funding for Tuesday’s swearing-in ceremony has been a challenge.

The outgoing Nana Akufo-Addo government is set to hand over the administration to President-elect John Mahama on Tuesday, January 7, 2025. According to the law, state funds are used to finance the ceremony.

Speaking about the outgoing president’s final State of the Nation Address (SONA) on the Joy News AM Show with Sweety Aboache on Monday, Dr Iddrisu claimed, “Even money to organize this swearing-in ceremony was a challenge for the government. It was a serious challenge.”

When Sweety asked where he obtained this information, Dr Iddrisu responded, “Don’t worry about that. I am telling you on record, organizing this swearing-in ceremony was a challenge.”

The economist explained that this is because the country is broke, stating, “It basically tells you that the country is broke.”

In his last State of the Nation address, the president stated that the country’s economy is bouncing back and that the country is not broke “as some propagandists want us to believe.”

However, Dr Iddrisu rejected this, claiming, “The president is lying to us,” and suggested that “It could be misinformation from the economic advisers.”
