Ghana Premier League Week 1: Karela United suffer defeat at home to Kumasi Asante Kotoko
This victory not only gave the Porcupine Warriors their first three points of the season but also ended a difficult seven-game winless streak against Karela United.
Asante Kotoko SC began their 2024-25 season on a strong note with a hard-earned 1-0 win over long-time rivals Karela United FC at the Naa Sheriga Sports Centre in Nareligu.
This victory not only gave the Porcupine Warriors their first three points of the season but also ended a difficult seven-game winless streak against Karela United.
The match’s defining moment came in the 37th minute when Albert Amoah, a new signing for Kotoko, made an immediate impact. He struck a powerful shot from inside the box that rocketed off the underside of the crossbar, leaving Karela’s goalkeeper, Mohammed Ganiu, helpless. Amoah’s debut goal proved to be the decisive boost Kotoko needed to set the tone for the new season.
Kotoko’s fresh additions played a vital role in their success. Congolese defender Samba O’Neil and Sudanese left-back Esmat Abdulhamid, both making their debuts, provided much-needed stability in defense. Guinean goalkeeper Mohamed Camara, filling in for Frederick Asare, delivered a standout performance, especially in the second half, making crucial saves to keep Karela from equalizing.
Though Karela increased their intensity and pushed hard for a goal after the break, they couldn’t breach Kotoko’s defense. Camara’s excellent shot-stopping ensured the Porcupine Warriors held on to their narrow lead, securing a crucial win to open their season on a high note.
