The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, in collaboration with the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP), has organized a capacity-building workshop for newly recruited Regional Coordinators of the GSFP to enhance service delivery across the country.

The GSFP, an initiative under Pillar 3 of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP), aims to improve food security and reduce hunger in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on hunger, poverty, and malnutrition.

Established in 2005 with just 10 schools, the GSFP has since expanded significantly, now serving over 1,900 schools and benefiting more than 1.7 million children across all 261 districts in Ghana. The programme has had a measurable impact on school enrolment, especially among girls, as well as on attendance and retention in beneficiary schools.

Despite facing challenges such as funding delays, rising food prices, and the need for stronger monitoring systems, the programme remains committed to its core objectives.

In an interview, National Coordinator of the GSFP, Hajia Fati, reiterated the programme’s vital role in combating malnutrition and promoting school enrolment and retention. She urged the newly appointed Regional Coordinators to carry out their duties with commitment and a proactive, solution-oriented approach.

She also announced that the government has increased the feeding grant per child per day from GHS 1.50 to GHS 2.00—a move expected to significantly improve the programme’s impact.

“The main objective of this workshop is to prepare participants for the new policy directions and operational guidelines,” she said.

Hajia Fati concluded by encouraging the coordinators to work effectively and transparently to ensure the sustainability of the programme and to extend its benefits to even more school children across the country.
