A 25-year-old football fan who ran onto the pitch during Ghana versus South Africa AFCON qualifier is in police custody, and will be arraigned before court on Friday, November 15, GBC’s Akosua Adjei has tweeted.

It emerged that the man who invaded the pitch during the Black Stars game against South Africa was a 400-metre runner in his days at Apam Senior High School.

During the match, a man who has now been identified as Awal Sulemana outrun some security officials and made his way onto the pitch.

The man was eventually apprehended by officials and sent to the police station at Cape Coast University where he passed the night.

According to the stadium announcer for the match, the pitch invader is a nurse who is awaiting postings and a resident of Kotokoraba, a suburb of Cape Coast.

“The Black Stars defeated South Africa 2-0 in their first game of the 2021 AFCON qualifiers and have safely returned to Accra,” Ghana’s FA has said.
