GhanaDecides: Goodluck Jonathan Leads Observers to Visit National Election Security Taskforce
The WAEF’s presence underscores the significance of Ghana’s elections in promoting democracy and stability in the region.
Former Nigerian President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, leading a delegation of the West African Elders Forum (WAEF) observation mission, is in Ghana to monitor the 2024 elections.
As part of their activities, Dr. Jonathan and his team visited the National Election Security Taskforce to engage in continuous monitoring of the electoral process. Speaking briefly to the media during the visit, Dr. Jonathan emphasized the importance of collaboration among key stakeholders in ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections.
“Since arriving three days ago, we have been meeting with key stakeholders to exchange ideas. When it comes to elections, there are three critical institutions: the police, the Electoral Commission, and the judiciary,” he said.
Dr. Jonathan noted that while politicians are often blamed for election violence, lapses in electoral regulation can also play a significant role. “Regulation in the electoral process is essential for free and fair elections. I compare it to a football match—if the rules are not enforced, players might score goals with their hands,” he explained.
He called on the Electoral Commission, the National Election Security Taskforce, and the judiciary to strengthen their efforts and maintain high standards of engagement. “Africa and the world are watching, and they expect another peaceful election in Ghana, followed by a smooth transfer of power,” he concluded.
The WAEF’s presence underscores the significance of Ghana’s elections in promoting democracy and stability in the region.
