Ghanaian Academic Lukumanu Iddrisu Makes History as First Ghanaian Elected Municipal Councilor in Finland

In a groundbreaking achievement, Ghanaian academic and civic leader, Lukumanu Iddrisu, has made history by becoming the first Ghanaian ever elected as a municipal councilor in Finland.

Securing 284 votes in the 2025 municipal elections, Iddrisu emerged as the seventh-highest vote-getter within his party, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Vaasa, earning him a seat on the Vaasa Municipal Council. This remarkable milestone reflects both his personal dedication and the growing recognition of his leadership within Finnish civic life.

Iddrisu’s journey to political office is nothing short of inspiring. Arriving in Vaasa in 2014 as an international student, he began life in Finland working as a cleaner while pursuing his education. Through perseverance, hard work, and continuous self-development, he rose to become a Project Manager, a part-time lecturer at Vaasa University of Applied Sciences (VAMK), and a respected public figure championing the cause of international residents.

Over the past decade, Iddrisu has actively mentored countless internationals in Finland, helping them navigate societal challenges and achieve professional goals. His work has consistently emphasized inclusion, diversity, and equitable opportunities, making him a key advocate for integration and representation.

As Project Manager of the Vaasa Spouse Programme, Iddrisu has played a pivotal role in helping hundreds of international spouses and residents find professional footing and civic belonging in Finnish society. His efforts in building inclusive communities and promoting internationalization have earned him widespread respect across Finland.

This latest achievement adds to his growing list of accolades. In 2021, he was named Alumnus of the Year by VAMK — the first Ghanaian in Finland to receive the honor — and also won the Best Summer Employee of the Year award. In 2022, his master’s thesis on employer branding at the University of Vaasa was celebrated as Thesis of the Year in the Strategic Business Development programme, underscoring his academic brilliance and impact.
