A renowned Fetish Priest at Akim-Oda the capital of the Birem Central Municipality in the Eastern Region, Togbui Edzotorku has blamed politicians for the dwindling spirit of patriotism in Ghanaians.
According to the fetish priest who was speaking in a recent interview with Ghananewsonline.com.gh, politicians have over the years failed to live exemplary lives that would motivate Ghanaians to cling to the tenets of patriotism.
“In the fight for independence, Kwame Nkrumah succeeded in whipping up patriotic feelings among the nationalist fighters. How did he do it? He associated himself with ordinary people and demonstrated to them that he was championing their course. But so far, I think the political leaders that we have in Ghana now are more of selfish, self-seeking, self-perpetuating, self centered and they are self-aggrandizing personalities” Togbui sadly noted.
According to the chief priest, if you have leaders with such features then obviously it will become difficult for the people to be inculcated in them the spirit of patriotism.
Torgbe Edzotorku revealed that, nationalism and patriotism have become very deficient in Ghana today, adding that, “absolutely nobody thinks about the country first; we all think about ourselves first, our families second, our parties third, maybe, our communities fourth and Ghana comes in a distant fifth, sixth or even tenth”.
He indicated that the only way to boost nationalism and patriotism in Ghanaians is to equip the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) with the necessary logistics and funds to discharge its constitutional duties effectively.
Togbui also appealed to the government and it’s officials not to ignore African traditional priests when it comes to spiritual matters of the country. He lamented the fact that Christains and Muslim leaders are considered in the search for spiritual intervention for the country, but saeme cannot be said of traditional priests.
“We shouldn’t forget Kwame Nkrumah brought “kankan Nyame” because he thinks independence can’t be achieved with our physical strength, rather spiritual matters also Counts”.
