Ghanaian basic and secondary school students will be denied the benefit of Ghana’s rich ancient and pre-independent history in the new government-inspired curriculum.
The new curriculum places its entire emphasis on the political activities of Ghana’s first President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and his arch-rival Dr. J.B Danquah.
Critics say the new curriculum is basically a narrative that further reinforces the subservience of Ghana’s political elite to their former colonial masters as it refuses to focus on aspects of history that will truly give students in their formative knowledge state to know their true ancient heritage.
For instance, alternative historians have pointed out how Ghana and African school curriculums deliberately ignores aspects of history that prove that Africa had advanced civilisation, technology and political systems before the invasion of Western colonisers-starting with the Portuguese.
Conventional curriculum avoid teaching history such as the advent of present day Ghanaians from the Sahara area as part of the pyramid builders; as part of the Moorish conquerors that captured and enslaved Europeans in the 10th or the resistant spirits of Ghanaians to as far as Jamaica where the Koromatines and the Maroons that fought and defeated the Europeans in the West Indies were distinctively Ghanaians, mostly from the Akan stock.
World renowned Ghanaian historians such as Nii Ayi Kwei Armah, Professor Adu Boahene, and Dr. J.B Dankwa have all written extensively on these historical situations that could boost the self-esteem of young students.
However, a statement released by the National Council for Curriculum Assessment (NaCCA) confirmed the fixation on a Ghanaian history that basically focuses on a tussle between the political narrative between supporters of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and J.B Danquah.
“The period covered in the history curriculum at the primary level focuses mainly on the pre-independent events that formed the basis for the later development political activities which contributed to the independence of Ghana. At this stage, Dr. J. B Danquah played a prominent role. It is therefore important for our young learners to appreciate the chronology of our political history,” the NaCCA wrote in a statement released on Tuesday.
It went further to explain that at the Junior High School (JHS) and Senior High School (SHS), the history curriculum will focus on independent and post independent activities where Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was prominent in.
A group of political coalition known as the Nkrumahists-with the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) as its main advocate have accused the current New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration of engaging in historical revisionism that distorts Ghana’s history. However, officials in the current administration, including President Akufo Addo, have countered saying history as taught in Ghana has been selective-excluding activities of the founders of the NPP’s political ideologies. This unending tussle has necessitated the revision of Ghana’s history curriculum.
According to the NaCCA, the designers of the current history curriculum are “scholars of great repute”, including Professor Emeritus D.E.K Amenumey.
