Ghana’s Speaker Orders Probe into Border Officers’ Assault on Woman

Alban Bagbin, Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, has initiated an investigation into a disturbing video that surfaced showing immigration officers allegedly assaulting a woman at the Aflao border in Ketu South Municipality.

MP Abla Dzifa Gomashie brought the incident to light during parliamentary proceedings, raising concerns about the training standards and conduct at the border facility.

Bagbin instructed the Interior Minister to provide a comprehensive report to Parliament by July 29, 2024, underscoring that such actions by public servants are intolerable.

“The use of force by public servants, particularly against women, is unacceptable,” Bagbin emphasized. “We must ensure that those who serve the public do so with dignity and respect.”

He highlighted the distinction between public servants and armed forces, stressing that the former are expected to uphold professionalism and refrain from unnecessary force.

“I am deeply troubled by the uncivilized behaviour exhibited in the video,” Bagbin continued. “It is imperative that a thorough investigation be conducted to ascertain the facts surrounding this incident.”

The Speaker’s directive signals a parliamentary commitment to upholding citizens’ rights and dignity, calling for accountability and corrective action within Ghana’s immigration service.
