Giz Partners Dagban Chiefs To End Violence In Agogboloshie

GIZ, a German Development Cooperation has partnered with the Council of Dagbang Chiefs in Greater Accra to eliminate political and chieftaincy violence among Dagbang Youth dealing in scraps at Agbogboloshie in the Greater Accra region.

The GIZ in partnership with the council of chiefs in Greater Accra formed a peace committee to mediate between the feuding factions, especially the NPP and NDC youth at the Agbogboloshie.

The peace committee which is chaired by the Kasoa Dagbamba Naa who also doubles as the chairman of the Council of Dagbang Chiefs, Greater Accra region consists some selected residents of the Agbogboloshie market, the leadership of the NPP and the NDC and as well as leadership of the Greater Accra Scraps Dealers Association.

There has been recurring violence at Agbogboloshie among Dagbang Youth anytime there is a change of government. This leads to loss of lives and property.

To bring a lasting solution to the violence at Agbogboloshie,  the peace committee led by the Kasoa and the Nima Dagomba Chiefs with support from the GIZ on Monday, 2nd December 2019 began a three-day visit to some revered chiefs in Dagbang Kingdom.

The visit to the revered chiefs was to seek for their endorsement, recognition, blessings, guidelines, and authority to the peace committee initiated by the GIZ and the Council of Dagbang Chiefs in the Greater Accra region.

According to the consultant for GIZ, Dr. Samson Atiemo, the continues fighting among the youth at the Agbogboloshie market is impeding development in the area hence, the need for chiefs in Dagbang Kingdom to help eliminate the canker.

Mr. Atiemo noted that the GIZ initiated a lot of projects to empower the scrap dealers at the Agbogboloshie market.

Some of the projects include the construction of a clinic, renovation of football park and the construction of a training center to train the youth at the Agbogboloshie market.

He described the Agbogboloshie market as a proxy battlefield and called on Dagbang chiefs to intervene to bring a lasting solution to the violence.

Some of the chiefs visited includes the paramount chiefs for Tolon, Nyanpkala, Sagnarigu, Savelgugu and the Diyali traditional areas.

Other chiefs visited were the Tamale Dakpema and the paramount chiefs for Kumbungu, Gukpegu and the Mion traditional areas.

The peace committee ended their three-day tour today, Wednesday, 4th December 2019 by calling on the Yaa-Naa, Kug-Naa, Zohi-Naa and the Mba-Dugu all in Yendi, the traditional capital of Dagbang.

All the chiefs visited openly declared their support to the peace committee and assured the GIZ that they will help to eliminate violence at Agbogboloshie and the Dagbang as a whole.

A renowned peace broker, popularly known as Alhaji One-One who has been touted for playing a critical role in the restoration of peace to the Dagbang Kingdom was also part of the delegation.
