GJA announces new Date for its National and Regional Executive elections

The Association had been sued by one Caroline Boateng who had contended that the supervision of the upcoming election and its governing processes by the current executives was illegal

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), has announced it will organize its stalled National and Regional Executive elections by October 3, 2021.

A press statement released on Friday said this was possible because a lawsuit brought against the elections has been settled out of court amicably.

The Association had been sued by one Caroline Boateng who had contended that the supervision of the upcoming election and its governing processes by the current executives was illegal since the tenure of the Affail Monney administration is supposed to have expired.

Ms. Boateng had injuncted the elections and asked the court to put together an interim Executive Committee made up of all the former Presidents of the Association in place of the current executive committee.

But according to the 3rd September statement signed by General Secretary, Mr. Kofi Yeboah, the parties reached an amicable settlement under the auspices of the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru ll and signed an agreement on Friday.

Per the agreement, a supervisory election committee is to be established within one week of signing the agreement, and a month subsequent to that, the elections held.

‘Within seven days from now, September 3, the GJA shall establish its 2021 Election Supervision Committee to work with the Elections Committee of the Association to conduct the elections.’

The Supervision Committee will consist of a representative of each of the aspirants for national office positions and each of the regions

“The swearing-in of new executives shall be held within two weeks after the declaration of election results.”

.Meanwhile, aspirants are entreated to submit their names to the Chairman, GJA Elections Committee, Ghana International Press Centre, Accra, before the close of work on Monday, September 6, 2021,” the statement said.
