In a stunning revelation, the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has blown the whistle on a growing crisis within the health sector involving rampant alcohol abuse, drug addiction, and disturbing cases of sexual misconduct among medical professionals. These shocking behaviors, according to the GMA President Dr. Frank Serebour, are jeopardizing patient care and dragging the integrity of the medical profession into disrepute.

Addressing a packed room at the GMA’s annual general meeting, Dr. Serebour sounded the alarm on an industry plagued by scandal and facing multiple lawsuits for alleged medical negligence. “We have some health personnel caught in the grip of alcohol and drugs,” he declared, stressing that these impairments not only tarnish their lives but, more dangerously, affect their daily interactions with patients.

The bombshell didn’t stop there. Dr. Serebour disclosed that the Medical and Dental Council is currently investigating numerous complaints of sexual harassment involving healthcare workers, a revelation that has sent shockwaves through the medical community. These complaints, he said, highlight a disturbing pattern of abuse by some professionals tasked with patient safety.

To make matters worse, Dr. Serebour shared that lawsuits against health facilities are on the rise, with many cases revealing harrowing instances of unprofessional behavior. “In some cases,” he revealed, “we only escape lawsuits because victims are too quick to blame witches and wizards instead of holding us accountable.”

The GMA President didn’t mince words about other troubling trends among medical staff, including chronic lateness, absenteeism, and minimal work hours. “Some workers stroll in at 9:00 a.m. and leave by noon, yet expect full salaries. Are we witnessing the death of professionalism in the health sector?” he questioned.
