The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has presented medical items worth GHS 10,000 to the Tamale Central Prison, and additional GHS 4,000 to be used to complete an ongoing project.
The inmates and officers on duty were also given free medical screening and lunch.
According to the association, this gesture forms part of activities marking the 61st annual conference of the association, which is expected to end on Sunday November 10.
Presenting the items on behalf of the association, Dr. Frank Ankobia, president of GMA, expressed concerns about the health status of inmates in prisons across the country.
He stated that though the prisoners are serving sentences for crimes committed, their health should be a priority to the nation.
“It is in view of this that the GMA this year chose the theme ‘the health of prisoners and other vulnerable groups in Ghana; the realities and expectations.’”
Dr. Ankobia said that the prison is a place that no one plans to be, but in one way or the other people find themselves there due to unforeseen circumstances amongst others.
He assured the Prison Service that the GMA will continue to support them when the need arise.
The Council Chair of the Prison Service, Most Rev. Peter Paul applauded the efforts of GMA. He noted that prisoners go through a lot of challenges, especially with their health needs.
Most Rev. Peter Paul also appealed to the general public and benevolent organizations to continually come to their aid.
