‘Go and account to the press’ – Adongo to Bawumia on calls for presidential debate

Isaac Adongo, who has earlier issued a circular to express why it would be unnecessary for John Mahama to engage Bawumia in such a discourse, has reemphasised why the call should not be granted a modicum of attention.

Isaac Adongo, the Ranking Member on Parliament’s Finance Committee, has reiterated his stance that the flag bearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, will never debate the Vice President.

The Vice President, who is also the flag bearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called for a debate between himself and the flag bearer of the NDC.

The call, which has come severally from the camp of the government, according to the Vice President and government communicators, will offer the opposition the opportunity to punch holes into the economy which the NDC says has been mismanaged by this administration.

Isaac Adongo, who has earlier issued a circular to express why it would be unnecessary for John Mahama to engage Bawumia in such a discourse, has reemphasised why the call should not be granted a modicum of attention.

He contends the challenge is a ploy by the government to capitalize on the popularity of the former President to revitalise the diminished political career  of the Vice President.

Bawumia’s failing career, which according to the Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, is marred by perceived dishonesty and incompetence, will not be given credence by the NDC.

His reiteration of the issue comes on the back of the recent call by the Majority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, that the platform will offer John Mahama the opportunity to expose the failures of the government.

But Mr. Adongo insists Bawumia lacks credibility as a result of his perceived dishonesty, questioning if President Akufo-Addo failed to debate Mahama in 2020 because he was ill-prepared as the NPP has been saying.

Like he said earlier, Adongo wants Bawumia to meet the press like John Mahama did, and account to Ghanaians through the media, rather than seeking to resurrect his dead career through Mahama.

“In 2020, was it because Akufo-Addo was clueless, was it because Akufo-Addo was insulting? Why wasn’t Akufo-Addo prepared to meet John Mahama in a debate in 2020? And now you are calling for a debate after you’ve messed up your career, you want to use John Mahama to resurrect your career, not because you’re going to say anything, you’re going to lie.”

“If you know that you are better and you have done well, John Mahama met the press, even as an opposition leader. Why are you not meeting the press? Let them put the questions to you, go and account to the press,” he said on Citi FM Tuesday, July 30, 2024.
