Gov’t blows cash on Wasteful Diaspora Town Hall Meeting

The Akufo-Addo government is raising eyebrows by scheduling a “Town Hall Meeting” in the United States (US) on April 14, 2019. Critics think this event is a blatant waste of public funds.

The town hall meeting is formatted as a physical interaction between the general public and Economic Management Team (EMT) Headed by Vice President Mahmud Bawumia.

The government is planning a similar meeting in Washington DC ON April 14, 2019. A high-powered government delegation consisting of Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, Yaw Osafo Maafo-Senior Minister; Professor Gyan Baffour-Ministry of Planning and Information Minister Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah.

However, Whatsup News can confirm that most Ghanaians in the diaspora who follow socio-economic events in Ghana get their first-hand information from the plethora of relay Radio and Television organisations in the diaspora and also from the highly pervasive social media platforms such as Whatsup and Facebook.

Indeed, the town hall meeting held last week was circulated extensively on these platforms keeping Ghanaians abroad up-to-date.

The plan is seen as duplication and a lack of creativity on the part of the Ghanaian gov’t to take advantage of social media and the abundance of electronic media serving the Ghanaian diaspora to communicate its message.

Critic estimate that hardly would there be up to 1000 people to attend the planned meeting in Washington and this would represent an insignificant number of Ghanaians in the US or the entire diaspora.
“This government should know that whatever is happening in Ghana gets to Ghanaians abroad in real-time through new media platforms and online platforms of conventional media located in Ghana. What is the sense in expending much-needed funds to fly in these bunch of officials just to come and talk to an insignificant number of people that would not even circulate whatever information they get from this outrageous town hall meeting,” an angry Ghanaian in Germany told Whatsup News.

The first in the series this year was held last week where Dr. Bawumia gave a breakdown of the economic situation of the country and also announced some important policies.

Shortly after this meeting, the ruling party and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have torn into each other over statements made by the Vice President.
