Govt Hands Over 30 Vehicles To GIS

Government through the Ministry of the Interior has handed over 30 new vehicles to the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), to enable personnel effectively manage the country’s borders.

The vehicles include 23 Toyota Land Cruisers GXR, three (3) Toyota Land Cruisers Twin Turbo, one (1) Toyota Land Cruiser VXS, one (1) Toyota Tundra and two (2) Toyota Double Cabin Pick-ups.

Presenting the vehicles at a short ceremony at the forecourt of the Ghana Immigration Service headquarters in Accra yesterday, Minister of the Interior, Ambrose Dery, said the government was aware of the challenges facing GIS in terms of logistics and  residential accommodation, hence its commitment to solving the challenges to enable them manage and protect the country’s borders.

He said the provision of the  vehicles, which forms part of the process of retooling security agencies, will also enable personnel of GIS to discharge their mandate of regulating, monitoring the entry, residence, employment and the exit of foreigners in Ghana effectively and efficiently.

The minister said the government, being aware of the threats posed by undesirable elements at the various borders, is doing everything possible to support GIS, the lead agency in the border security management of Ghana.

He, therefore, assured the service of government’s preparedness to revamp the Border Patrol Unit (BPU) to make it more efficient and visible at the borders, to address the emerging threats to border and national security.

The Comptroller General of the Ghana Immigration Service, Kwame Asuah Takyi, who received the donation on behalf of the Service, expressed gratitude to President Akufo-Addo for his continuous support and goodwill to the GIS.

He appealed to individuals and corporate bodies to lend a hand of support to the GIS to help it secure the borders of the country given the enormous demands expected of government.
